This round steel shield was used by the Italian (Rotella) and Spanish (Rodela) light infantry of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, though examples exist in every Western European tradition of the time. It features prominently in Italian treaties and in particular those of the so-called Bolognese school.
Marozzo, Manciolino, the Anonimo Bolognese, Agrippa, di Grassi, Giganti and others wrote on the technique of rotella combat.
This polished shield is handcrafted from 1 mm mild steel and measures approximately 57cm in diameter. On the back, an adjustable leather strap and a steel and wood hand grip are firmly attached to a black padded band.
